Tara Calico’s Unsolved Disappearance — And Reappearance In A Polaroid

On September 20, 1988, Tara Calico left her home in Valencia County, New Mexico, for her daily bike ride. The 19-year-old never returned. Her mother believes Tara appeared in a Polaroid photo the following year, showing a girl tied up. This puzzling case has baffled investigators for decades.

That morning, Tara jokingly told her mother to come find her if she wasn’t back by noon. She had a tennis date with her boyfriend at 12:30 p.m. and planned to be on time. When she didn’t return by noon, her mother drove along Tara’s usual bike route but found nothing. She then contacted the police, but despite a search party, few clues emerged.

Pieces of Tara’s Walkman and cassette tape were found along her route, leading police to think she might have deliberately broken them to leave clues. However, her case went cold for the next nine months.

Authorities investigated Tara’s home life, looking for any reasons behind her disappearance, such as abuse. They found only two distressed parents who dearly loved their daughter and wanted her found safe.

On June 15, 1989, a Polaroid was found in a convenience store parking lot 1,500 miles away. The photo showed a teenage girl resembling Tara and a young boy, both tied up with duct tape over their mouths, lying on sheets and a pillow.

Tara’s mother was convinced the girl in the photo was her daughter, noting the same scar on her thigh. While the FBI was skeptical, experts at Scotland Yard agreed with her.

The mystery deepened when the Henley family claimed the boy in the photo was their son, Michael Henley. His remains were found in the Zuni Mountains in 1990, likely due to hypothermia after wandering away from his family’s campsite.

In 2008, Sheriff Rene Rivera of Valencia County proposed a theory. He received information that Tara was killed in a car accident while riding her bike. The sheriff said a teenage driver, fearing the consequences, disposed of her body. Despite this claim, no arrests were made. Tara’s parents moved to Florida, hoping for a fresh start, but Tara Calico has never been found, and her disappearance remains unsolved.
